SUNSHINE ON MY SHOULDERS

Hi Mom and Dad,

Courtney has some "events" tomorrow (Friday) that you are invited to attend. However, I know you are flying in around noon, so if you are too tired and just want to relax, both of us would completely understand.

At 4:30 PM, there is a Graduate Awards Ceremony, where Courtney will be receiving an award.

At 6:00 PM, all of the graduating students will be showing their art that they worked on while at the school. It's basically an art show for all the graphic design students.

So, we'd love it if you wanted to come -- but seriously, if you are too tired or want to do something else, neither one of us will be offended at all. I just wanted to let you know our schedule.

Looking forward to seeing you guys!

Love,

Anthony”

Now that is a good son, however, we flew to California for a reason, and that was to bask in the joy of TLC (The Lovely Courtney) graduating from some hard work, and a well focused plan dedicated to a single purpose, to become a graphic designer, not just a graphic designer, but the best she could possible be. The sunshine and rest would have to wait.

Indeed, TLC would begin the weekend that would leave a mark on Woodbury University and in the heart and souls of her in-law parents, who fall in love with her every time we see her.  If you think this is bragging, then excuse me, but if it was a stranger, I’d still be impressed by the things this lovely lady accomplished and would memorialize them in this blogue.

At 4:30 PM, there is a Graduate Awards Ceremony, where Courtney will be receiving an award.”

The above was what we thought, as we were greeted at the Bob Hope airport in Burbank by #1 Son, and we checked in got a car rental and drove off to our hotel and then lunch, while TLC got ready for the beginning of her incredible weekend.

TLW (The Little Woman) was as pumped up as I was about this event, to know TLC was finally done with the long hours of homework and the difficulties of a job and school, and getting out into the world. I was particularly happy that she was going into my profession, and that we could relate to something besides #1 Son! What we didn’t realize was what she has accomplished in that school, Woodbury University.

#1 Son and Roger
Getting together at the house, we all along with her Dad Roger (I’ll introduce you to him in time) we headed off to the ceremony, arriving a little before 4:30 pm, under the sunny skies of California, onto a beautiful campus filled with flowers, green rolling knolls and palm trees.

Not 2 minutes there and they are giving her awards!
As we move to where we were expected to sit, there was some activity on stage, and a lot of empty lemonade punch containers about, and we figured something else had gone on, when suddenly the Gentleman on the stage announces Courtney’s name to come up and receive the Dora E. Kirby Award for the Highest Scholastic Achievement in Graphic Design! This woman was getting awards before she even got there! She had mistakenly got the impression that the awards ceremony was at 4:30, when it was at 2:30! But even that she did well, since it saved us from 2 hours of speeches and sitting in hard chairs. The only drawback, we missed her receiving another of her awards that day!

Monday, the reception continues…

Joe, you and Ellen seemed as proud of Courtney as her mother and I are! We are glad to share her with you s much as we are glad you share your son Anthony with us! And we are equally proud of all of his achievements as well! I had a blast with you two! Hopefully we can wheel around Disneyland again soon!

Roger,
When I see two good kids like ours connect, are morally decent and yet humble,I can't help but be happy. For us as parents and for them to spend their lives together, and that they found each other, makes for a better world. I am also happy because all that led to a new friendship and for my wife and I. I certainly hope we can scoot around Disneyland again, too! I WAS a blast, thanks for the time, we enjoyed that weekend.
